Snoring

Forty-five percent of normal adults snore at least occasionally and 25 percent are habitual snorers. Problem snoring is more frequent in males and overweight people, and usually worsens with age. Snoring may be an indication of obstructed breathing, known as “sleep apnoea”, and should not be taken lightly as this may cause significant health issues.

The noisy sounds of snoring occur when there is an obstruction to the free flow of air through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. This area is the collapsible & restrictive part of the airway where the tongue and upper throat meet the soft palate and uvula. Snoring occurs when these structures strike each other and vibrate during breathing.

Socially snoring can make the snorer an object of ridicule and can cause the bed partner to experience sleepless nights and fatigue. Medically, snoring disturbs sleeping patterns and deprives the snorer of adequate rest. It may be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which can lead to serious, long-term health problems.

OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNOEA

Snoring may be a sign of a more serious condition known as obstructive sleep apnoea and is characterised by multiple episodes of breathing pauses greater than 10 seconds at a time, due to upper airway narrowing or collapse. This results in lower amounts of oxygen in the blood, which causes the heart to work harder. It also causes disruption of the natural sleep cycle, which makes people feel poorly rested despite adequate time in bed. Sleep apnoea patients may experience 30 to 300 such events per night.

The immediate effect of sleep apnoea is that the snorer must sleep lightly and keep the throat soft tissues & muscles tense in order to keep airflow to the lungs. Because the snorer does not get a good rest, the patient may often be sleepy during the day, which impairs memory and performance. This is very dangerous if the patient is driving, or operates dangerous machinery. Untreated obstructive sleep apnoea increases the risk of developing heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, diabetes, and many other medical problems.

NIGHTLASE SNORING & SLEEP APNOEA TREATMENTS

The Nightlase Laser Treatment is a revolutionary treatment for the reduction of Snoring and Sleep Apnoea. The laser treatment may also effectively reduce bad breath, mouth infections and discolorations.

The Snoring and Sleep Apnoea occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is physically obstructed. Often the soft tissue in the back of your throat relaxes during sleep and blocks the airway resulting in snoring and a disrupted sleep.

The Nightlase “stop snoring” treatment reverses this problem by tightening and strengthening the tissue that would relax and obstruct the air passage. It must be noted that the longer you leave this treatment the more severe the condition may become and may ultimately require CPAP or surgery.

During the Nightlase treatment the tissue in the upper roof of the throat will be gently and gradually tightened with  Erbium Yag Laser. The laser light heats and resurfaces the mucosal soft tissue, and stimulates the creation of collagen, in turn tightening and lifting the soft palate tissue to reduce snoring and sleep apnoea. This is the most effective and natural snoring solution that is available to date.

Nightlase Snoring Laser Treatment Advantages:

  • No hospitalization or surgery required

  • Simple 30 minute treatments

  • Most patients only require 3 – 4 treatments

  • Painless treatments and no downtime

  • Results start immediately & continue to improve with time

  • Non-invasive long lasting natural results

  • Slows down the progression of snoring & sleep apnoea

  • No uncomfortable devices to be worn at night

The Nightlase snoring laser treatment is a simple, painless, 30 minute medical procedure that doesn’t involve any anaesthesia, therefore allowing patients to return to your normal routine straight after the procedure. Patients report a warm sensation on the upper roof of the mouth during the treatment. Most patients require 3-4 treatments, and treatments are generally performed 3 weeks apart.

The full effect of the treatment will however take place a month after the third treatment where you will notice a definite change and improvement to your snoring and sleep apnoea.  Nightlase results will last more than a year in most patients. This can vary depending on the individual and their skin laxity. When we age, the density of our collagen fibres reduce, therefore overtime the strength and elasticity of our skin will start to sag. In this case the skin we have tightened to reduce your snoring and sleep apnoea may start to lose its laxity so a maintenance treatment may be required a year or so later.

All medical procedures may have small risks or variable results, and some patients may not be suitable for certain procedures. However, these procedures are non-surgical therefore avoiding complications and risks of traditional surgery or general anaesthesia.
